BJites in US to chip in for hospital project in Ahemdabad
With plans afoot to develop Ahmedabad’s Civil Hospital into one of the biggest hospitals in the world, the 2,200-strong alumni
association of BJ Medical College in the US, is all charged up to work with Gujarat government on this project and contribute in every way possible.
“This is the best time for us to formulate guidelines and work out a partnership. The state government is very open minded and I plan to approach them on my next visit to India,” says newly elected president of the association, Dr Dharmi Kanuga, a haemato ophthalmologist. She took over charge from outgoing president Dr Bhanji Kundaria at the 10th annual convention of the association held over three days in September at Parsippany, New Jersey.
The new president has ambitious plans for the association, which along with the Indian alumni association has been actively sponsoring various projects like upgrading library, hostels, canteen, auditorium, patient care in various departments as well as providing full scholarships to 35 students for over four years of medical education.
With about 2,200 BJites settled in US alone and most of them doing well financially, Dr Kanuga suggests that if each BJite decides to donate $100 per year as Mothers Day gift to their alma mater, they will make a significant difference to the lives of students and faculty back home. “$220,000 is a good enough sum. It can be generated from donations from the US alumni alone. We have BJites in other parts of the world. If they too chip in, imagine the fund we can create to implement our projects successfully,” she says.
