This Navratri, e-pill ke side effects
What’s the buzzword this Navratri? Along with the navel-tattoo and size zero, it’s the e-pill. This being the first festive season after the ‘emergency contraceptive pill’ made a splash in the market, experts say it has created a big buzz among youngsters and could well be a cause of concern. For, it’s side-effects could be highly damaging.
A recent survey in city conducted by Dr DJ Mohan of Environmental Bureau of Investigation (EBI) revealed that of the women who went to purchase e-pills in chemist shops, 41 per cent were in the 20-25 age group while seven per cent were in the age group of 15-20 years.
“Indiscriminate use of emergency oral contraceptive pills is a cause of concern this Navratri,” says Dr Mohan.
Available over-the-counter and easy to pop after the act, doctors say they are already seeing a rise in number of youngsters using the e-pill after having unprotected sex and coming to them after it has failed or led to late diagnosed pregnancies or irregular periods.
“Youngsters should be warned about the fact that e-pill has high levels of hormone. Taking a regular low-dose monthly pill would be a smarter idea. The emergency pill is for one-time consumption, in case of a doubt after a sexual act,” says gynaecologist Dr Bindu Shah.
“The young are increasingly becoming sexually active. We get cases where the girl or even married women have taken an emergency pill three to four times. This way, they are consuming at least three times more hormones than the regular contraceptive pills taken over a whole month,” says Dr Shah.
Doctors also warn that these pills do not protect against transmission of HIV or STD. “Those popping these pills now come to us only when they get irregular periods due to high dose of hormones,” says gynaecologist Dr Supriya Dalal.
