More rains in store for Gujarat

The weather office has issued a heavy to very heavy rainfall warning in Saurashtra and also issued port and fishermen warning on Tuesday. Ahmedabad and other parts of Gujarat are also expected to receive moderate rainfall activity.

It did not rain, it poured in Saurashtra as the region received heavy to very heavy spells of rainfall as part of the active wellmarked low pressure system over the Bay of Bengal. Rajkot and Porbander districts received 20 cm each. Kutch-Bhuj have also received heavy rainfall.

Weather officials said that rains are expected to last the week. “Since the system is seabased , it is not expected to weaken easily and is likely to give rainfall to the state almost throughout the week,” said Kamaljeet Ray, director (forecasting) of the India Meteorology Department (IMD), Gujarat.

Officials said that since Ahmedabad lies adjoining both the north and the central Gujarat, it is also expected to get moderate rainfall for the next two to three days.

Officials said that warning will be reviewed on Wednesday and predictions on whether the rainfall season will continue or start withdrawing will be decided only after the week is over. As per figures made available by the relief department, six districts in the state have received over 90 per cent rainfall while 41 talukas have received over 100 percent.

Junagadh in Saurashtra that has suffered water scarcity for many years has received the highest 110.47 per cent of the average rainfall. Junagadh is followed by Navsari that got 103 per cent of their annual rainfall.

Meanwhile, the last leg of monsoon has comparatively eased the situation of water storage in dams. The dams have received around 6 per cent water in two days of heavy rains. Kutch has received over 10 million cubic feet of water in the dams.
