Trip to Diu - 425 kms from Ahmedabad

Diu was a portugese colony and hence is called the GOA near Gujarat. It is an Union territory and hence gives the opportunity of all of Gujarat to go there and have a good time since Liquour is officially allowed in the Union territories.

I along with friends took a bus journey off to Diu from Ahmedabad. It is around 425 kms journey and there are 2 routes available, you can go either thru Bhavnagar or thru Rajkot. The Rajkot route is more than 100kms more than the Bhavnagar route. The highway is not a very busy highway but the roads are not great either and the highway is two-way most of the way. We went in July and rains took off the top layer of the road and hence was a bumpy ride. We started our journey at 8a.m. and the first stop was at Dhandhuka at a nice place called “ Anchor” where we had our breakfast. It is a nice place with clean toilets and the tea is great too. The Dosa was okay but edible. It has a Pan shop and a confectionery shop too for the people who want to Smoke or eat Pan. This journey was half way to Bhavnagar and around 115 kms from Ahmedabad. We decided to take  our lunch break at 12 noon on reaching Bhavnagar at R.K.Garderns Restaurant which is half way journey. The restaurant was clean and it had a huge gardern, some amusement park for the children was also under construction. Rajbhog ice-cream was really good to have after the meal. The food is a little oily but hygienic. The next stop was at Mahua (half distance from Bhavnagar to Diu) for tea, which was around 2 hours from Bhavnagar. On the way, since the tyre got punctured, we had to take a one hour break, but the scenery was great with palm and coconut trees giving you the feel of Kerala and the roadside shop serving us Maasala Thumps Up. There were rickshaws (big Bikes) which were loading women and children and ferrying them to different parts of the village. We reached Diu around 7.30 p.m. The roads were good in Diu and a lot of beaches earmarked, just like GOA. Nagoa beach is a famous beach in Diu. We had booked ourselves at Hotel Kohinoor. Adjacent to this hotel is a deluxe Five star hotel coming up which we heard is been built by Ajay Devgan. The hotel is cosy with different types of rooms and a nice pool in the centre. The tariffs were also quite reasonable (probably due to off season) and a single room costed us Rs.1950, whereas double occupancy costed us around Rs.2400. The food was great especially the chicken and the fish. Veg food is also good. They offer excellent service.

Very good fish is available for the sea lovers at Beach Nagoa. I personally prefer that one should take a train from Ahmedabad to Veraval, which is an overnight journey and then take a private car to Diu which is around 100kms (2 hour car journey) from Veraval. While going back to Gujarat, please ensure that you do not carry liquor back which are a tempting price (even cheaper than Mumbai, a 750ml of Bacardi costs around Rs.200-300 in Diu) as the cars are thoroughly checked at the entrance/exit to Diu.
