Gordhan Thal at Ahmedabad
Gordhan Thal located at the Sarkhej-Gandhinagar highway is a legendary outlet in its own right. The beginning can be traced back to Gordhan maharaj (chef in Gujarati) hailing from Rajasthan who had become a household name in catering in traditional Ahmedabad. As eating out turned into a fashion statement, his heirs decided to ‘cash in’ on the brand’s goodwill and have established a popular restaurant called Gordhan Thal.
The ambience and decor of this restaurant is Rajwadi style with detailing in mirror work, mud work and other traditional Rajasthani interiors.
Weekends are very crowded since people come in large groups and you may have to wait for some time. On weekdays also it is crowded especially during marriage season as people in large groups of 70-80 people or more come together to have food at Gordhan Thal.

Its one of my favourite Gujarati Thali joints as the food is a mix of traditional Gujarati and other states. Food like traditional Gujarati food is a mix of sweet and spicy. I think its very reasonably priced for the variety and quality they serve. The food is served in clean white metal crockery. They serve Puri and chappati (bhakris only in evening), 3 snacks that is traditionally called Farsan, Papad, Gujarati Dal and Kadhi, 2 sweets, 5 vegetables, Rice, pickles, salad chutneys etc.
The restaurant is neat and clean. Service and the ambience both are really good. What I also like is they neither give you finger bowls, or like traditional restaurants you don’t have to go to the wash basin to wash your hands but there is person who comes with a hot water in metal carved surahi (jug) with a bowl in which you wash hands. If you do not want to eat at the restaurant you can get the food packed for Rs 350/- (Rs 300/- if you get your own boxes for food to be packed).
